The Stewart family were an outstanding family, especially as teachers. The earliest member of the family recorded was Alexander Theophilus Stewart, of Mountainside, St. Elizabeth.
'Mr. Stewart was a native of Westmoreland, and in his early days he chose for his work the teaching profession. He laboured in several parishes, and always won the esteem and respect of those with whom he came in contact. He gave up the profession for a time and entered the Government's employ, where he did creditable service, being at one time Deputy Superintendent of the General Penitentiary, and later on Superintendent, in charge of the Black River Prison. But he was not to be long denied following his first calling. In 1883 Mr. Stewart severed his connection with the prison authorities, and again re-entered the teaching fraternity. He then became teacher and catechist of St. Augustine Church and School, Mountainside, where he laboured faithfully for the last 27 years. Taking the school at a low standard, in a few years he brought it up to a good First Class, which position it maintained up to the amalgamation in 1914. He subsequently took charge of Arlington school where he laboured up to the time of his death. He was much respected in the community on account of his genial manner and helpfulness in various ways.'
from the obituary, Daily Gleaner, July 6, 1916.
'Teacher' Stewart, of Mountainside, St Elizabeth, was himself an outstanding teacher, and his children were also outstanding in their professions - two in teaching, one in business and one as a pharmacist and business man.
